What Are You Reading?

I love asking this question because I love hearing all of the different answers. It’s encouraging to hear what others are reading, and it also gives me ideas of what to read next. It’s also great to be able to ask someone “What did you think about [insert title]?”

Right now I’m reading 2 books:

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown (Don’t worry, I’m not a heretic)
What’s So Great About Christianity by Dinesh D’Souza

I’ll be honest, I tried reading Twilight just so I could have grounds to state my opinion, but I couldn’t make it past the second chapter. It was torture!

Give me some feedback. What are you reading?

This Ain’t Oprah’s Book Club

So I have this idea, and it might be crazy and it might not. I either expect to receive many responses, or none at all (except for my sweet girlfriend and people who are just going to post because I said I expect no responses).

Anyway, if you read my blogs, you know I enjoy reading. You also know I have trouble staying focused on one book. My mind, life, and interests race all over the place, and so I have trouble staying committed to a book. Therefore, it’s difficult for me to finish a book.

Well, many of you have admitted to the same thing. So, I have an idea that might help us all stay focused on reading, and also learn more from what we’re reading.

Without sounding too much like Oprah, I think it would be cool if me and whoever else wants to started reading the same book(s) and then used this blog or some other online source as a way of discussion.

I’m not talking about sitting around in a circle and crying over Mitch Albom’s latest. I’m talking about taking a book, that particularly encompasses higher level thinking, and discussing it. More than likely, it would be a book that is either written from a Christian worldview, or maybe even a book that attacks it.  I’m not really looking to bring in fiction. If you want to discuss that, you can go down to Borders on Tuesday night.

If you’re interested, let me know. I’ve already got the first book in mind.

I’m thinking that I will give the book title within the next week, and then allow about 10-14 days for people to pickup/order/borrow the book. Read more…

Life Changing Books

I’m sure we can all sing along with the theme: “…take a look, it’s in a book, Reading Rainbow!”

We also remember LeVar Burton encouraging us to read and check out our local library.

Since most of us are not kids anymore (at least in age), I am wondering what books have been the most influential or life-changing for you.

Is there a book that changed your entire worldview? Did a piece of literature completely change the way you live?

I have asked several of my former college professors that very same question. In the next week or so, I will post the responses they gave me concerning the 5-10 books/authors that influenced them most in life.

So here’s the question one more time…short, sweet, and simple:

What book or books have been the most influential in your life?

(Btw…if the Reading Rainbow theme song was a food, it would be a major pixifood! See 2 blogs down for explanation)

Reading Between the Lines

I am great when it comes to starting books. Seriously, one of the best. Yes, that may sound prideful, but it’s true. One of my best talents is the ability to dive into a book and begin reading. The problem is, I am probably the worst person on earth at finishing books. Starting is easy…getting past chapter 2 is another story.

I love reading and I love reading all types of things–newspapers, fiction, theology, sports, technology, entertainment, etc. However, for some reason, I have trouble getting through entire books.

The irony is, there are so many books I want to own, but so few I’ll probably finish reading.

A few weeks ago, I started reading Read more…
