Have You Read “The Shack?”

A friend and I have started reading and discussing books. So far we have read A Mind for God by James Emery White and we are about to finish What’s So Great About Christianity? by Dinesh D’Souza.

The next book we are reading is The Shack by William P. Young. Our goal is to read the book and compare its ideas, thoughts, presentations, claims, etc to the truth of Scripture.

Have you read The Shack? What were your thoughts about it?

    Heh. I think you know.

I’ve read “The Shack”. I thought it was a really good fiction read. It used pretty good word imagery to bring things to life. If you set out to read it for what it is, you’ll be impressed, just don’t set out to base your theology on it. I know people got their nickers in a twist because father God is portrayed as an elderly black woman, but again, this is a work of fiction. There are some things in the book that can help people deal with grief and the quesion of “where is God when bad things happen”, but like I said before, you don’t want to read it and take it for theological fact.

Finally read it after being told “You just have to read this book!” about 1,500,000 times. There were parts that I found moving and touching in dealing with the problem of pain and suffering. With that said, I didn’t think it was very well written at all from a purely literary standpoint (in my humble opinion).

I thought it was soft theologically in places as well. I realize it wasn’t the authors intention to write a systematic theology, but there were several places where I found myself saying, “Quit beating around the bush and just come out and say what you believe!”
