This past Saturday (March 28, 2009) at 8:30 PM was designated as Earth Hour across the entire world. The task of Earth Hour was simple–turn off all your lights for 1 hour.

However, the meaning behind everything went a little deeper. Here’s what the official site, EarthHour.org said about the event:

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Obviously, the phrase “global warming” raises a red flag to many people. Immediately, we think of Al Gore, liberalism, and truth that is apparently inconvenient.

While Earth Hour is something that is being promoted and endorsed by people that believe in global warming, should it also be followed by people who believe global warming is a hoax?

Christians acknowledge (or at least should) that God created the earth and we have the responsibility to care for His creation. We are called to be good stewards of what He has given us…including resources like water, wildlife, and even energy. It’s all part of protecting what He has given us.

Is Earth Hour something people from both sides of the spectrum can agree on, even if we disagree on the intended purpose?

Or is it something that should be ignored by conservatives who reject the idea of global warming and acknowledge that God is in control of the earth?

If you completely disagree with the idea of global warming, should you turn all of your lights on so your “vote” doesn’t get counted?

Let the debate begin…

My approach to energy conservation is more about being practical than “saving the earth.” I use my lights only when I need them, and make sure I turn off lights that are not needed. I started using the compact fluorescent light bulbs, because they last longer and use less electricity. To me, saving electricity is more about lowering my monthly electric bill than fighting global warming (if there is such a thing).
I don’t mind doing practical things that benefit me too, but when it comes to going out of my way to “save the earth” I just don’t feel the need.

I believe I have every light in the house turned on about that time! Oh well…

Interesting question. Two things come to my mind. First is 2 Corinthians 6:14, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” I’m sure there are believers on the global warming side, but I’m guessing that position is dominated by unbelievers (correct me if I’m wrong). You’d have to ask yourself if that verse applies in this situation. Even though you may want basically the same thing, are you basing your goal on a different value system/worldview/identity narrative (whatever you want to call it)?
Second is the old Sunday school mantra: Measure, Means & Motive. How far are you willing to go? (care for the environment, or save the planet)How much are you willing to do? (Do your part and be an influence, or legislate green morality) What is driving you to do it? (Are you a steward of your Father’s possession, or is Earth your mother)

I had a California Condor burger that night. What’s the odds of that?

I originally left a huge comment on this post, but my computer timed out and I lost it. So I will just simply say this…

Earth hour is a large movement inspired by Al Gore’s inferiority complex, and is part of his overall plan to use the fear generated from global warming to control as many people as possible.

All personal opinions aside, here are the facts.

-Global warming is based solely on the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Trees need carbon dioxide to live and make oxygen. That should throw up a red flag right away.
-Since 1998, the climate has actually been stagnate or cooling. And if you want some proof, look for a recent study by the University of Nebraska. Unfortunately, we as Americans prefer panic versus realizing the ebb and flow of all trends, even weather.
-There’s a book called “Green Hell” that everyone should read. It will help you realize that Global Warming is the biggest hoax in the 20/21st century and all it’s going to do is herd the American people into the vice grips of the liberal left and its agenda.

This sounds paranoid and like something out of a conspiracy theory, but find out more about global warming and you’ll find that they’re the cooky ones…

Btw, I don’t have anything against treating the environment with respect, but we have to remember that God put man in charge of the earth, not the other way around. We also need to know that He has put things in place to balance out the use of the earth and its atmosphere. He’s smarter than we are. Instead of trusting Al Gore, let’s trust God.
