This Ain’t Oprah’s Book Club, Part II

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Books

I apologize for leaving my blog idle for 2 days. I’ve been home sick, but now I’m back in the office ready to finish out the week!

Well, if you read my last post, you know I’m trying to set up some kind of network where several of us (or thousands of us) can actually read the same book and try to dissect it and learn from each other.

I also mentioned that I had a book in mind. However, I did not think the first 2 people to reply with interest would be 2 people who have already read the book. The book I was thinking of was A Mind for God by James Emery White. But if I’m not mistaken, Derek and Matthew have already read the book.

So, I’ve gone back to the drawing board and come up with a few more ideas. Instead of just naming one book, I figured I would toss out several ideas and we can all decide which book would be best to start with.

Here are the books I have considered:

St. Augustine - The Confessions

Thomas A’ Kempis - Imitation of Christ

Brother Lawrence - The Practice of the Presence of God

James Emery White – A Search for the Spiritual

C.S. Lewis – Many possibilties

A list that might be worth looking at is 10 Books That Changed Everything from Relevant Magazine. I’ve pulled the first 3 books off that list.

So, take a look, think about it, and throw your ideas into the hat.

I realize those books might be a little deeper than what we want to start with. If so, that’s definitely cool.

Matthew, unfortunately I can get you no discount. But, I do know the first 3 books I listed can be bought for mere pennies at a used bookstore or very cheap from Amazon.com.

Let me know what you think! Maybe we can decide on this by next week and start reading!

I wouldnt reccommend the confessions. it bogs down and is very in-depth. i couldnt get through it. How about frank peretti? he is the greatest writer ever. he puts shakespeare to shame.

I wouldn’t mind reading “A Mind for God” again. I read it alone the first time. It would good to read it again with an opportunity to discuss it. If that doesn’t work, I would not mind reading “A Search for the Spiritual.”

If you’re up for it, that would be awesome! On Monday I’ll try to get it finalized. If anyone has any objections to “A Mind for God,” go ahead and voice it. If not, cool.
