Forget Oprah–Read This Book Instead!

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Books, Pop Culture, The Church

Well, the decision has finally been made. For those of you who were interested in reading a book as a group (or something like that), we finally have a title.

The book will be A Mind for God by James Emery White.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with the author, Dr. James Emery White was the President of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and is a scholar in the areas of Christian theology, culture, and apologetics.

Here’s what Amazon.com has to say about the book:

To be fully human is to think.

The apostle Paul calls us to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor 10:5). But James Emery White fears that Western Christians are failing in this task. Because we have not developed good intellectual habits, our minds instead have been captured by our culture.

A Mind for God is written to help us break free from this cultural captivity through the spiritual and intellectual disciplines of reading, study and reflection. This inspirational and practical “rule for the mind” encourages and enables us to develop our minds for God.

One reason I’m really glad we’re reading this book is because of the reading suggestions the book contains. At the back of the book are lists of books and authors that every person should be. Some of the books represent a Christian worldview, and others do not. Regardless, this should be a great book to get started with, and a great springboard into other material.

If you are interested in reading along and participating in the discussion, try to have your copy of the book by December 8. That should give enough time for people that are serious about this to order it, borrow it from the library, or pick it up at a local store.

Personally, I have never had success finding it at a local store, but it can be purchased off Amazon and other Internet retailers for around $10, new and used.

So, if you are still interested, let me know! I’m really looking forward to it! It’s open for anyone!

Sorry I haven’t said anything until now. But I’ll probably join the reading. By the time you start in December, I should have a lot more free time.
Guess I better start looking …
