Lessons Learned from Rudy Giuliani, Colin Powell, and Zig Ziglar

Yesterday I attended the “Get Motivated Conference” at the Sommet Center in Nashville, TN. 24 hours later,  I can’t say that I feel any more motivated, but I did get to hear some great speakers give some great advice. I thought it might be nice to share my notes with whoever cares:

Zig Ziglar

- The most important character trait is truth (integrity).

- You can have everything in life you want if you help enough people.

- Always be learning something new.

- “Accepting Jesus was the best decision I ever made.”

- “I read the newspaper and the Bible every morning, because I like seeing what’s going on with both sides.”

Rudy Giuliani

- Know what you believe in; Have a destination and know where you are going.

- Be able to face things and take a risk. When it comes to fear, everyone is afraid. Heroes are the people who can overcome that fear from the greater good.

- If you prepare for everything, you’ll prepare for the unexpected.

- Always be optimistic and don’t run away from your problems. Vince Lombardi once said, “I didn’t lose. I just ran out of time.”

- Find people who balance your weaknesses

- You must love people!

General Colin Powell

- Realize everyone you meet is important and part of a team and organization. No one is better than anyone else. The janitor that cleans your office is not “just a janitor;” he or she is a valuable part of your team.

- It doesn’t matter who wins the upcoming election. The important thing is for Americans to come together as one country.

- Let people know how much you care about them. Send a note to every person you are in charge of. Let them know they are not just an employee. Be an encouragement!

Bruce Pearl, Coach of the Tennessee Vols Basketball Team

1) Enjoy the process
2) Focus on the process

- Raise your level of expectations for yourself

- Build confidence through preparation and hard work

- Attitude is everything

- Be a great communicator

- Stay hungry for knowledge and keep learning

- Learn how to handle adversity

- Take calculated risks

- Sometimes you have to step back to move forward

That’s it in a nutshell. Those are just a few of the talking points I took away. To an onlooker, it might look like a typical “health and wealth”/Tony Robbins seminar. In some ways it was, but it was also inspiring to hear some of our country’s great leaders speak.
