Main Event- McCain/Palin vs. Obama/Biden

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Politics

Well folks, the stage has been set for the main event. In one corner we have the GOP, led by the age and experience of John McCain and the maverick-like attitude of Sarah Palin. In the other corner, the Dems are represented by the audacity of hope and agent of change, Barack Obama, tag-teaming with his partner, Joe Robinette (I did not make that up) Biden.

So we finally have our final 2 candidates for the Presidential election and now finally know who their running mates will be. (Someone like Ralph Nader might slip his name in, but really, who cares?)

So the 2008 election is upon us. Mudslinging is well under way, commercials are attacking everything from the sanctity of life to foreign oil.

Now that we are in the home stretch, let me ask you this question:

What is the most important issue for you?

I know there are many issues that affect all of us and issues we have deep convictions/preferences about. But what is the single most important issue to you in the upcoming campaign?

Btw, if you are an American citizen over the age of 18 and have not registered to vote, DO IT NOW! Who you vote for is not as important as IF you vote. You can reigster by clicking here.

Pixifoods

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Random, Youth Culture

Wasn’t being a kid so much fun? If you’re from my generation, childhood consisted of watching Batman (with Adam West) at 4 PM everyday, blowing in Nintendo games to make them work, and playing tackle football in 8 inches of snow and 12 degree weather.

Do you remember the foods we used to eat? If it had vegetables, gross! If it had sugar, yum! If it was advertised during cartoons, double-yum!

Today I read about Pixifoods. Here’s the definition I found:

Pixifood (PIKZ-ee-food)noun: Any food substance that is highly pleasant to the taste as a child and tastes shockingly unpleasant once you become an adult.

Yeah, I know…foods are already coming to your mind! A fellow blogger, named Joe Posnanski, compiled a list of “pixifoods.” For some Friday fun and nostalgia, I thought I would share those with you:

Baseball Card Gum
As a child it tastes like: Bubble blowing magic.
As an adult it tastes like: Sugared sandpaper.

Beanie Weenies
As a child it tastes like: Smoky, beanie, weenie jubilation.
As an adult it tastes like: Cat food with an Italian twist. Read more…

D6 Conference Location Revealed!!!

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: The Church

So lately, the only question bigger than “Will Michael Phelps win 8 gold medals?” has been “Where will the D6 Conference be held?”

Well ladies and gentlemen, it is time to release the location of the D6 Conference.

Actually, let’s have a little fun with some hints…

- A winner of “Dancing with the Stars” is known for playing football in this city

- A former New York Mets manager has the same first name as this city.

- A TV show that premiered September 23, 1978 was named after this city.

- Google Dirk Nowitzski (no it’s not in Germany)

- 1998-1998 Stanley Cup Champions

Here’s one more subtle hint…

The D6 Conference from Randall House will be held in Dallas, Texas on September 23-25, 2009 at the Frisco Convention Center!

You do NOT want to miss this! If you register by October 1, you’ll receive a ridiculously low discounted rate! How low? Like 1/10 of what it cost to fix my car low!

This will be the biggest thing to hit Dallas since Emmitt Smith (the answer to the first clue). This will be a bigger story than Mark Cuban, Jerry Jones, or even who Tony Romo is dating (not that you should care about that anyway.)

So who’s gonna be there?

  • George Barna- author and founded of the Barna Research Group
  • Jim Daly- President of Focus on the Family
  • Fred Stoeker- author of Every Man’s Battle
  • Dr. John Trent- author and founding president of StrongFamilies.com
  • Darren Whitehead- Direction of Next Gen Ministries at Willow Creek Community Church
  • Dave Ramsey- (via video)- everyone’s financial expert

So I know you gotta be interested, so here’s what I want you to do…

I want you to check out the D6 Conference page. Click on the link and just check it out and see what it’s about. While you’re there, navigate around the D6 site.

Hope to see you there!

Mindset List for the Class of 2012

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Books, Movies, Music, Random, Youth Culture

Before I start, let me encourage you to stop by here tomorrow, August 21, at 11:00 AM CT for a HUGE announcement concerning RH’s D6 Conference. Anyway…

Each year, Beloit College releases a “Mindset List for the Class of…” The list humorously and factually depicts the culture a graduating class has grown up in. This year, Beloit released the “Mindset List for the Class of 2012″ since new college freshman will (hopefully) be graduating in 2012. You can find the list on Beloit’s web site by clicking here and I’m sure this will eventually be spread 2 billion times as a MySpace bulletin, but I have included it in my blog for your viewing pleasure:

The class of 2012 has grown up in an era where computers and rapid communication are the norm, and colleges no longer trumpet the fact that residence halls are “wired” and equipped with the latest hardware. These students will hardly recognize the availability of telephones in their rooms since they have seldom utilized landlines during their adolescence. They will continue to live on their cell phones and communicate via texting. Roommates, few of whom have ever shared a bedroom, have already checked out each other on Facebook where they have shared their most personal thoughts with the whole world.

It is a multicultural, politically correct and “green” generation that has hardly noticed the threats to their privacy and has never feared the Russians and the Warsaw Pact.

Students entering college for the first time this fall were generally born in 1990.

For these students, Sammy Davis Jr., Jim Henson, Ryan White, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Freddy Krueger have always been dead.

  1. Harry Potter could be a classmate, playing on their Quidditch team.
  2. Since they were in diapers, karaoke machines have been annoying people at parties.
  3. They have always been looking for Carmen Sandiego. Read more…

My Car Was Built by Inmates

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Ethics

About 2 weeks ago, a little light showed up on my dashboard. No big deal. It was just telling me I was low on coolant. You’re supposed to replace it after about 150,000 miles and I was at 140,000. No biggie. I got the coolant, replaced it, and went on my merry way.

About a week and a half later, that same light came on again. Uh oh! Could it be a sensor problem? Maybe a small leak in the radiator? Who knows? I took my 1999 Chevy Malibu to Firestone to have it checked out. 4 hours later, one of the mechanics looked at me and just shook his head. He said:

“Well, it’s not the worst thing it could be, but it’s pretty bad. And, it’s not your fault or the car’s fault. Whoever built this engine should be put in prison. Read more…

Why It’s Hard to Like Christians

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Ethics, The Church

I don’t like Christians. Sorry, but it’s true. Not all Christians, but some Christians. Why? Well…

Several weeks ago, I was in Charleston, West Virginia for the National Association of Free Will Baptists. If you’re not sure what this is, just imagine 6,000 Baptists all crammed into one convention center and occupying all of the hotels and restaurants within a 5 mile radius.

Located just minutes from the convention center was a food court, placed conveniently in the middle of the mall. One of the staff members of the convention decided to ask an employee of Chik-Fil-A just how everything had been going. The gist of the employee’s response: “Well, so far the teenagers here have been great; it’s the adults we’ve been having problems with.”

Later on in that week, some staff members from the same convention asked a waitress at Chile’s how things had gone that week. Her response: “Well, the tips haven’t really been so great.”

And thus, just a few examples of what it can be hard to like Christians. I’m not talking just from society’s point of view, I’m speaking from my personal point of view. Sure I love them, but I have a really difficult time liking “Christians.”

Reading Between the Lines

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Books

I am great when it comes to starting books. Seriously, one of the best. Yes, that may sound prideful, but it’s true. One of my best talents is the ability to dive into a book and begin reading. The problem is, I am probably the worst person on earth at finishing books. Starting is easy…getting past chapter 2 is another story.

I love reading and I love reading all types of things–newspapers, fiction, theology, sports, technology, entertainment, etc. However, for some reason, I have trouble getting through entire books.

The irony is, there are so many books I want to own, but so few I’ll probably finish reading.

A few weeks ago, I started reading Read more…

Desensitized by Media

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Movies, Music, Youth Culture

I was reading an article in USA Today this afternoon and came across a Q&A that really caught my eye. Let me give you the info before I tell who you the interview was with:

Q: What do you think of these video games as a way for music lovers to interact with music?

A: The music thing is OK, but there are so many other video games. Like I went “wow” at the one with carjacking and all of that. Some desensitize kids, you know. It’s a changing time.

That quote came from none other than Read more…

Brett Favre

Author: DavidJones  //  Category: Ethics, Sports, Youth Culture

If you’ve been keeping up with sports at all, you’ve probably heard all of the controversy with Brett Favre. ESPN has been giving 10X as much coverage to this issue as they are to the Olympics which start in 2 days.

In a nutshell, Brett Favre, longtime quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, announced his retirement this off-season and the role of quarterback was handed over to Aaron Rodgers, who has been waiting in Favre’s shadow for the past 3 years. Well, when Favre retired, Rodgers was named the team’s started quarterback.

Unpleased with his decision, Favre decided to return to football. However, the Packers had already named Rodgers the starting QB. This created quite a dilemma for the team: Read more…
